Since its establishment in 2000, Uganda Telecom is committed to providing the Ugandan community, both corporate and individual with sophisticated telecom services. From a telecom company with basic services in the past limited around fixed telephony and telex, we have now grown into Uganda’s leading and only total communications services provider.
Today, Uganda Telecom offers a diversified range of communication services ranging from fixed line, 2G and 3G mobile, Internet, and business solutions, connecting Uganda to all parts of the world.
At Uganda Telecom we pride ourselves in understanding specific customer needs and tailoring solutions to meet those specific needs. We don’t believe in one size fits all approach.
To date, we have developed some of the most unique products in the market, based on our approach to meet specific customer needs. We, in partnership with UNICEF and the Uganda Registration services Bureau developed a web based death and birth registration system, which enables births and deaths to be registered from anywhere in Uganda in real time using a mobile phone or computer. This is one of many firsts that we have been involved in.
We were also the first to switch our customers to the high capacity platform entering into partnership with SEACOM to deliver high capacity fiber optic connectivity. Before this, UTL was receiving internet capacity over satellite and passing on the same capability to its customers. This was a costly mode of delivering internet access and as a result, costs were high. We are also one of two Ugandan providers with a direct stake in the EASSy cable which will further increase our capacity to deliver fast, affordable and reliable bandwidth in Uganda.
We also launched our mobile money service, Msente. This is a fast, secure and reliable service that gives our customers the opportunity to use their mobile phones not just for telephony, but to carry out a host of financial transactions in a convenient manner using their phones. So many Ugandans can now send and receive money, pay utility and other bills such as water bills, DStv, school fees and many others at their convenience, as well as buy airtime and do shopping using their mobile phones. Msente was the first service in the country that was offered using USSD technology, meaning the service sat on the network and not the simcard like other operators.
We are proud of our evolution since our establishment. Besides the fixed line, international direct-dial service, mobile service, Internet services and the 3G service that we pioneered in Uganda, we have been taking the lead in the progression of the telecommunications arena in Uganda.
The rapid development of the business arena in Uganda, as well as the liberalization of the telecom sector has brought forth new challenges and opportunities to Uganda Telecom. We have established the blueprint for the development of “Digital Uganda” and have earmarked resources to shape Uganda into a digital nation which in part has involved the building of a next generation Internet based IP core network, integrating mobile, broadband, high-speed data services and applications to enable government, enterprises, businesses and local residents to enjoy world-class communications services anytime, anywhere. This development will help Uganda enhance the quality of life of residents and an environment for conducting business.
With the extensive experience in telecom operations, I am confident that Uganda telecom will remain committed to the Ugandan Community and will strive for customer excellence to guarantee top-level telecom service for every resident in Uganda.
