Uganda telecom open golf tournament is the most prestigious golf tournament in Uganda.

Uganda telecom held the 6th annual golf tournament on 9th and 10th September 2006. The two day tournament was teed off by the Chairman of the uganda telecom board, Mr. Patrick Kabonero on Saturday 9th September at 7:30am.

The over 50 million shilling tournament was held at the Uganda Golf Club in Kitante and the tournament was only open to members of the Uganda Golf Club. Selection was done at the club and a total of 195 registered members were selected from a total of over 270 interested golfers.

Players played 36 holes over the two days and were vying for a number of prizes and trophies. The overall winner, Mr. Nikhil Damani walked away with the traditional uganda telecom blue jacket as well as a trophy and a brand new laptop. Other prizes included fully connected state of the art Motorola mobile phones provided by Cell2Cell, fitness equipment, Beauty Spa treatment from Maisha spa at the Kampala Serena Hotel and many more.

The prize for this years’ participants who could sink a hole in one was a Motorola V3x RAZR and a pair of designer Oakley Razrwire blue tooth eyewear and 16,000 free hours of airtime. This year’s piga mingi walked away with a putting mat and golf club for practice. The winners for longest drive and nearest to the pin each got a trophy.
 
The professional golf players also participated in the tournament and played against each other. They were categorized on their own and competed for a purse of 3 million. Deo Akope took the top prize in the professional category of 1 million shillings.

Prize giving ceremony was attended by Hon Ham Mulira, the minister for ICT and he was the chief guest. The ceremony that took place at the Uganda Golf Club house was a glamorous event that crowned the end to a successful tournament.

“Uganda telecom is committed to building relationships through sport and this golf tournament is one opportunity for members of the corporate world to meet and interact with one another casually while doing a bit of exercise. We have invested over 50m in this event and we also sponsor Denis Anguyo, a professional golfer as part of our goal to promote sport in Uganda. Denis has just returned from England where he was playing the Exel tour where he ranked 52nd out of 150.”
