uganda telecom will this year host a leadership lecture on 3rd May 2007 at the Sheraton hotel. Participants will be hosted to dinner and an inspirational talk from Rob Parsons, a best selling author and international speaker who will touch on “The Heart of Success for Family and Business”.

The leadership Lecture series started in 2004 with an aim of offering a platform for lively intellectual discussion and debate on diverse social, economic, political and cultural issues affecting our society, while creating awareness and promoting the standard of living within the community.

The leadership series engages in charity work, as part of the corporate responsibility placed on them. Beneficiaries of these lectures have included Lira babies home, SOS village, Sanyu babies home and Toro babies’ home over the years.

Last year, 2006, the series collected money collected 9,000,000/= and uganda telecom matched the figure and topped up to make 26 million that went to building a much needed dormitory for the 66 children living in Toro babies’ home, run by the retired Bishop of Rwenzori diocese Kamanyire Eustus.

The dormitory was successfully completed and handed over to the Bishop on Friday, 20th April 2007. The dormitory can accommodate 50 children. The home caters for 130 children in total and the majority of whom have been placed in private homes so they can grow up with a sense of family. The home still caters for these children by providing food, money, clothes and fees for them.

This 2007 beneficiary of the leadership series has been identified, Health Alert Uganda is based in Gulu town and is an NGO that looks after over 1,050 children infected and affected by HIV. The majority of the children under the care of the NGO are between the ages of 2 and 18.

The needs of these children are very many and Health Alert Uganda relies on donations to sustain their mission. Last year, uganda telecom traveled to Gulu and donated scholastic as well as household materials and some food to the NGO. This year, the range of donations will include School fees, food, scholastic materials, clothes, mosquito nets and many more.

The annual leadership series has hosted several renowned personalities and speakers over the past four years including Professor Mahmood Mamdhani, Dr. Ron Jenson, Baroness Linda Chalker, and more recently Mr. Wilfred Kiboro, CEO of the Nation Media Group.

The participants of the annual leadership series, all donate towards these causes and uganda telecom matches the total amount donated, hence, doubling the total.

“As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility Program, Uganda Telecom has sponsored the Leadership Lecture Series during the past fours years; in order to bring together members of the private, public and academic sector who can engage in intellectual discourse and make a collective contribution to charitable activities in our community”, said Ruth Nansanje Kirinda, Uganda Telecom Public Relations Manager.

Whilst there is no formal charge for the dinner, as a way of collecting money, the charity would appreciate donation of at least Ug.shs100, 000/= or more which will be forwarded to the Health Alert Uganda. The series target a cross section of key people in Uganda and hope to attract a minimum of 300 people.
